Creative Writing for Teens


Join instructor Shari Becker for this online class designed to help students develop creative writing skills. Shari is a published author, a college essay and language arts tutor, and the founder of Whale Rock Workshops.

Creative Writing - Fiction:

Who is this for? Any high school student who wishes to do more writing. All the skills taught in this class will be applicable to college common application essays.
Format: This will be a fiction writing class. We will read short excerpts from popular fiction and literature, students will write, and then we will share and discuss our writing. Sharing is optional.
Topics include: Concrete language, dialogue, and emotion. The use of specific objects to enhance a scene.

Creative Writing - Personal Narrative:

Who is this for? Juniors gearing up to write their college common application essays. Students will NOT write their actual essays, but rather develop skills necessary.
Format: We will read both fiction and non-fiction excerpts. Students will write, and then we will share and discuss our writing. Sharing is optional.
Topics include: The importance of concrete language, finding one’s voice, and writing with vulnerability. We will also examine how to ascribe personal value to an object as well as strategies for answering writing prompts.
